Compatibility issues with importing mts from Canon XA25 to FCP X

Description: Follow this article to learn how to edit Canon XA25 AVCHD in Final Cut Pro X on Mac. The latest Mavericks is also supported!

Q: "Recently I got a Canon XA25 as gift for summer holiday. I shot lots of footages and really enjoy it. I saw my friends shared his Canon XA20 videos edited in FCP BUT when I try to playback the footage (I can only found the AVCHD file in memory card), quicktime did not like to open it nor did FCPX. Did I miss something?"

Canon XA25 is a newly released professional camera which is designed for "run and gun". It shoots exactly the same footages like XA20: Full HD 1080 60p/60i/30p/24p footages in AVCHD MTS and 1080 60p/30/24p as well as 720/360 30p/24p in MP4 format. The key different could be that Canon XA25 supports HD/SD-SDI output, which enables "direct connection to a microwave van, satellite uplink or other TV transmission system" and it’s also capable of recording uncompressed HD/SD-SDI signal.

Canon XA25 outputs video in extraordinary quality and does a great job in preventing shaking. You may have already taken this camera in summer holiday and shot lots of valuable moments. How do the footages like when playing back? Do you have any ideas about getting it editing in NLEs on Mac?

You may have learned that NLEs on Mac will not accept AVCHD MTS natively, especially for Final Cut Pro 6/7/X, iMovie, Avid Media Composer, etc. Each of them has its preferred video format/codec. For FCP, it’s the Apple ProRes codec.

Now follow this guide to learn how to import your Canon XA25 AVCHD MTS to Final Cut Pro 6/7/X.
